Sunday Stash #142 – Big City
I’ve been holding back on you for a while with this week’s fabric. Way back in June for Sunday Stash #130 I showed you some acquisitions from Material Obsession. What I didn’t show you though was the pièce de résistance from that trip! Feast your eyes on Big City in Mint from Alexander Henry. As I said to Kathy Doughty on the day, “I thought Alexander Henry was all pin-up policemen and Day of the Dead novelty prints?” As I perused her shelves of AH fabrics, I knew I had been stood corrected. This print offers the photo-realism of a typical novelty print, while actually being, well, visually interesting. (No, you do not need puppy dog, broccoli or San Francisco 49ers fabric in your quilt, trust me). A fabric called Big City, featuring what could easily be my city, in a quilt I’m making about the sins of the city? Perfection.
The primarily mint and pink areas provide an exact complimentary colour way, as do the pops of teal versus magenta, and cobalt blues versus canary yellows. Whomever designed this fabric knew exactly what they were doing, and I say to you, “Thank you very much!” I had hoped to have a plan for using it by now so I could surprise and delight you with its pre- and post- op awesomeness from my cutting board. However, this fabric and I are playing a daily, complimentary cat and mouse game: it wants to stay intact, I want to chop the bejesus out of it … ::sigh:: the fabric is winning. So far it has stumped me, and therefore thinks it has the upper hand. It better hold on tight though because I’m gonna bring the earthquake, and this Big City will soon be in pieces!

I don't think it could chop into it either! I'd end up framing it or something! I'll be fascinated to see what you do!
You could always buy another piece! That way you could chop one up and keep one whole.
It is beautiful! I think the pink section could be very fun to work with. Fabric has become quite the smart-ass now-a-days! Not wanting to be cut up must be the the last straw and needs to be dealt with before it gets out of hand!!

Wow. I haven't been really into prints lately (is print fatigue a thing?) but this IS interesting. What a lovely piece of art!

Just putting it out there that this will be the 'pattern' for a much larger project of the same scene done in tiny paper piecing and this will be the feature panel on the back…
I say leave this city cloth as a whole piece and do some interesting pieced borders around it. Or use it for a back. Don't cut it up. Metropolis wants to be left alone. Do nothing to break up Gotham City. Keep it's borders intact. Watch out for those rebel cutters!! Unite in one peace (piece)!
GORGEOUS!! It would work perfectly with Jay McCarroll's line Habitat if you can find some and do decide to chop it up!
Buy another one. One to chop and one to keep whole! Easy peasy solution. HA.
